Ella Mae Small Chosen To Fill Council Seat

The Concord City Council chose Ella Mae P. Small to fill the District 3 Council seat. She will replace her husband, Allen T. Small, who held the seat prior to his death in June.

Mrs. Small was one of four applicants for the seat. The council interviewed the candidates during a special meeting last night. Mrs. Small will be sworn in at the September City Council Meeting.

During her interview Mrs. Small commented that her experiences in the civic, government and social organizations of the City have given her a wide range view of the City and what is needed to make it even better. “I am a team player. I will listen to all sides, determine how an issue may affect everyone in the City and do the right thing by all people in the City,” she said.

“My selection to fill the council seat held by my husband, Allen T. Small, for District 3 is an opportunity for me to continue his vision for the wonderful people of our growing city. I shall work diligently with the Mayor and other City Council members to continue sound economic development, to secure more water and support projects that will improve the quality of life for our citizens. I sincerely thank the City Council for giving me the opportunity to serve my city,” Mrs. Small further commented.

A native of Hickory, Mrs. Small is a graduate of A&T University where she earned her B.S. in Early Childhood Education and Home Economics. She received her master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She also holds certificates from the National Institute of Health and Barber Scotia College.

Now retired, she taught in the Concord/Cabarrus County School Systems, Charlotte Mecklenburg School System, Atlanta Public Schools and Rowan/Cabarrus Technical School.

She is active in many organizations including serving as the treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of the Logan Neighborhood Action Association; Logan Community Day Care Board of Directors; Logan Optimist Club; NAACP; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority treasurer; National Education Association; NC Educators Association; Cabarrus County Retired School Association; NC Governmental Workers Association; Cabarrus County Child Protection Team and Sisters in Partnership. She also served on the committee to name U.S. 601 in memory of Warren C. Coleman.

Mrs. Small is a member of Price Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church where she has served in the positions of trustee board secretary, class leader, building fund financial secretary, missionary society, and hospitality committee chairperson.
